Actor from Horizon expressing concerns about the state of gaming, following the AI Aloy dispute at Sony
The use of AI technology in gaming is a topic that’s generating a lot of discussion lately. One of the most anticipated developments in this area comes from Nvidia, whose AI characters are expected to revolutionise the way we play video games.
However, not everyone is excited about these advancements. Ashly Burch, the voice actress behind Aloy from the popular Horizon series, has expressed concerns about the future of game performance as an art form. These concerns stem from ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes and the recent leaked video of an AI Aloy.
In this video, Sony software engineering director Sharwin Raghoebardajal was seen chatting with the AI Aloy. The video was a jarring revelation for gaming fans, with many describing it as "creepy," "ghastly," "rancid," and "cursed." However, Guerrilla, the game’s developer, clarified that the video did not reflect anything that was actively in development.
Burch, who wants to continue working as an actor in the gaming industry, expressed a desire for a new generation of actors in the gaming world. She feels worried about the future of game performance as an art form, especially in light of Sony’s experimentation with replacing Aloy with an AI chatbot.
There’s a distinction to be made between applying AI technology to NPCs versus beloved protagonists like Aloy. While Sony integrates artificial intelligence primarily to accelerate game and anime production processes, with plans to enhance system functions through AI in upcoming hardware like the PlayStation 6, there is no specific public information about AI use directly related to the main character Aloy in Horizon. AI use is generally aimed at speeding development and improving player experience rather than character-specific AI enhancements in Horizon.
Despite these concerns, there’s hope for a balance between AI innovation and human talent in the gaming industry. Burch believes that we can still see a new generation of incredible game performances in the future.
